Reading Lists

We’d like to recommend books that all Americans should read in order to understand better the American Experience and what it means to be an American.  The list is building slowly, and we’ll add books until we get to ten.  Your suggestions are welcome.

1) Of Plymouth Plantation – William Bradford

2)  Common Sense – Thomas Paine

3) The Federalist Papers – James Madison et al.

4) Democracy in America – Alexis de Tocqueville

5) Walden and Selected Essays –  Henry David Thoreau

6) Uncle Tom’s Cabin – Harriet Beecher Stowe

7) The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass – Frederick Douglass

8)  The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer – Mark Twain

9) The Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck

  1. Twain, Emerson, poetry from Dickinson and/or Whitman, and selections from Tocqueville, will give you ten!

  2. Not a book, but The American Scholar by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
